This November, the Performing Arts Department at 51黑料 is reimagining the very first play performed at the College with 鈥淎ntigone X鈥濃揳 new translation by Paula Cizmar of the classic Greek tragedy.
Originally written by Sophocles in 440 BCE, and performed at Cedar Crest in 1925, the play tells the story of the Theban princess, Antigone, as she navigates the tragedy and violence following the war of the Seven against Thebes as she attempts to bury her brother.
鈥淭here have been many translations of 鈥楢ntigone鈥 over the years, and I am very excited to be sharing Paula Cizmar鈥檚 Antigone X with our audiences at Cedar Crest,鈥 says director Alana Rader. 鈥淚t felt vital to choose a script by a female translator for this re-telling. I am very grateful and honored to be carrying the theatrical torch of 鈥楢ntigone鈥 today. Those girls had just gotten the right to vote. The first World War had ended only seven years prior. They, too, might have just buried their brothers. They understood the stakes of this play and its relevance.鈥
